The myth: there's a trick to getting Mounjaro for free

It comes up constantly, people searching for a discount code, a loophole, a friend-of-a-friend referral that skips the prescription. The honest answer is that no such shortcut exists legally. Tirzepatide is a Prescription-Only Medicine under UK law, which means a registered prescriber must assess you before it can be dispensed. Any seller offering it cheaply without that step is not operating legally, and the product itself may not be genuine.

The MHRA has been unambiguous on this. Fake weight-loss pens have been seized in significant numbers, including the first illicit UK manufacturing site for counterfeit tirzepatide pens, raided in Northampton in October 2025. Some fake pens seized in earlier operations were found to contain insulin instead of the labelled medicine, a potentially life-threatening substitution. The regulator publishes an online reporting tool where you can flag suspect sellers; using it protects other people too.

So the first clarification is this: the right question is not how to get Mounjaro for free, but how to get it through a route that is legal, clinically appropriate and genuinely safe. Two routes exist in the UK: the NHS and a private regulated pharmacy.

How the NHS free Mounjaro route actually works

Tirzepatide is available on the NHS following a NICE recommendation (TA1026), but access is being phased in gradually. The current cohort, active since June 2025, requires a BMI of 40 or above plus four or more of five specified conditions: high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia, obstructive sleep apnoea, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. From around June 2026, the threshold drops to BMI 35–39.9 with four or more of those conditions. From 1 April 2026, GP practices may prescribe tirzepatide under the updated GP contract, though participation is optional and varies by practice. Every NHS patient must also engage with wraparound diet and activity support as part of the programme. Meeting the BMI and condition criteria is necessary but not sufficient, your GP's practice needs to be participating and have capacity. Getting Mounjaro through your GP on the NHS is a realistic goal for some people, and it is genuinely free if you qualify. The private route: what the process looks like step by step

What eligibility looks like in practice

Whether you are pursuing the NHS route or a private prescription, the clinical criteria are similar in shape. The licensed indication for tirzepatide covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related condition such as prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, raised cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. A BMI alone does not decide the outcome. The prescriber reviews your medical history, current medicines, any contraindications, and your overall picture before a decision is made. Tirzepatide is not suitable during pregnancy, breastfeeding, or when trying to conceive, and is not licensed for anyone under 18.
