Getting the best out of Mounjaro starts before the first injection. In the UK, tirzepatide is a prescription-only medicine, which means a qualified prescriber must assess your health, confirm you're suitable, and issue a prescription — and that clinical step is genuinely where the results are shaped. You've probably read the trial numbers and thought: how do I actually access this, and how do I make it work? This page answers both. Mounjaro is licensed in the UK for weight management in adults with a qualifying BMI, and every legitimate route to it runs through a clinical assessment, whether that's via your GP, a specialist service, or a regulated online pharmacy like ours.

The full picture: access, verification and making treatment count

You've found the right medicine, here's what standing between you and it actually looks like

Picture this: you've done the research, you meet the BMI criteria on paper, and you're ready to start. The first thing to understand is that the route matters as much as the destination. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a Prescription-Only Medicine under UK law, which means no online cart, no over-the-counter option, and no shortcut through a seller on social media will give you the real thing safely. The NHS's tirzepatide medicines page lays out clearly what the medicine is and why clinical oversight is built into how it's supplied.

The legal route is straightforward once you know it. A prescriber assesses your health history, current medicines, BMI and any relevant conditions. If you're suitable, they issue a prescription. A GPhC-registered pharmacy dispenses it and sends it to you. That's the sequence, whether it happens through an NHS specialist service or a regulated private pharmacy. At our Mounjaro service, the consultation is free, the prescriber review happens the same day, and dispatch follows on the same day you're approved, assuming you've ordered before noon.

If you're transferring from another provider and already on a dose above the starting 2.5mg, our prescribers will ask for evidence of your current treatment before continuing at that level. That's not a hurdle for its own sake, it's the clinical standard that keeps dose progression safe.

Verifying any pharmacy before you hand over your health (and your money)

The MHRA has publicly documented what happens when people buy weight-loss injections from unverified sellers: fake pens have contained insulin, some have caused hospitalisations, and in October 2025 a site manufacturing counterfeit tirzepatide pens was raided in Northampton. Around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines, valued at roughly £45 million, were seized through 2025 enforcement alone. That's the scale of what's circulating.

The single most useful thing you can do before ordering from any online pharmacy is check the GPhC's pharmacy register. Every legitimately operating UK online pharmacy has a premises registration number listed there, ours is 9012878 and you can verify it in seconds. If a seller can't point you to a GPhC registration, or if they're offering tirzepatide without requiring a clinical consultation, that's the clearest red flag there is. Suspect sellers can be reported directly through the MHRA's Yellow Card service.

A note on pricing: if a price looks significantly below the market range for private tirzepatide, treat it as a warning, not a bargain. For a prescription medicine, the cheapest listing answers the wrong question entirely. Legitimate supply costs what it costs.

Who the prescription route is open to, and what the prescriber is actually weighing up

The licensed eligibility for Mounjaro in private practice follows the SmPC: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above alongside at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. Lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance, this is confirmed at consultation. BMI alone isn't the whole picture; a prescriber looks at your full health profile, current medicines, and any contraindications before deciding whether treatment is appropriate for you.

Mounjaro isn't licensed for under-18s, and it isn't recommended during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or if you're actively trying to conceive. Women taking the oral contraceptive pill should know that tirzepatide can reduce how well the pill is absorbed, particularly in the first four weeks of treatment and after each dose increase, NHS England's guidance on weight-management injections recommends adding a non-oral method of contraception during those windows. Our prescribers go through this at consultation, not as an afterthought.

For NHS access, NICE's appraisal of tirzepatide (TA1026) sets out phased eligibility criteria (currently BMI 40 or above with four or more qualifying conditions) with further cohorts becoming eligible through 2026 and 2027. If you don't meet those criteria yet, or prefer not to wait, private treatment through a regulated pharmacy is the alternative. If you're curious whether you'd qualify on the NHS, our FAQs cover the current phasing in plain terms.

Making the treatment actually work, the part most pages skip

Getting access is step one. Getting the most from it is the longer game, and the clinical relationship is what makes the difference. Tirzepatide works by activating both GIP and GLP-1 receptors, reducing appetite and slowing gastric emptying, but the lifestyle changes that run alongside it are part of the licensed indication, not optional extras. A reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity are built into how the medicine is meant to be used.

Practically, this means the weeks after your pen arrives matter. Some people find the first few days after a new dose bring nausea or digestive changes; these typically settle. If something feels wrong or you have questions about how your treatment is going, our aftercare team is available seven days a week, you're not handed a pen and left to figure it out alone. Monday is a popular day to get started, partly because it fits around the week ahead, and if you order before noon your treatment can ship the same day. The same goes for orders placed before a bank holiday, though delivery timing shifts accordingly.

For practical guidance on using your pen correctly, including how to get the last bit out of your Mounjaro pen so nothing goes to waste, and broader advice on how to get the best from Mounjaro throughout your treatment, both pages are worth a read. If you want to go deeper, our guide on how to get the most out of Mounjaro covers the habits and techniques that help the medicine do its job, and our page on how to get the rest of the Mounjaro out explains what to do if you're not sure your pen has delivered a full dose. And if you're based in Scotland and want to know more about collecting or sourcing treatment locally, our Mounjaro Glasgow pharmacy page explains what's available in the area.

The consultation takes a few minutes. Check your eligibility today and a prescriber will review it the same day.
