One thing the evidence is clear on: the subcutaneous route matters. The medicine is designed to be absorbed through the fatty tissue just beneath the skin, not into muscle. Pinching the skin before inserting the needle helps ensure you stay in the right layer, particularly if you are injecting into the thigh or upper arm.

The injection sequence, step by step

Before you start, wash your hands thoroughly. Remove the pen from the fridge and leave it for around 30 minutes, cold liquid stings more than room-temperature liquid, and a slightly warmer pen makes the process noticeably easier. Pinch a fold of skin, hold the pen at a 90-degree angle against it, and press the button firmly. Keep pressure on until you see the yellow indicator in the window and hear the click that signals the dose is complete, then hold for a further six seconds before lifting the pen away. Rotating sites and caring for your skin

The three licensed injection sites are the abdomen (at least 5cm from the navel), the front of the thigh, and the outer upper arm. Rotating among these (and moving to a different spot within each site) gives the skin time to recover and reduces the chance of lumps, thickening, or discomfort that can build up with repeated injections in exactly the same place. A simple system is to work around a clockface on each area, or to alternate between sites on a fixed weekly rotation.
