How to prime the Mounjaro KwikPen — and why most people skip a step they shouldn't

The misconception worth clearing up first: priming every week

The priming steps, in plain order

Before you begin, wash your hands thoroughly. Take the pen from the fridge and let it sit at room temperature for a few minutes; injecting cold medicine can be uncomfortable. Check the label is correct for your dose and strength, and inspect the medicine through the viewing window, it should be clear and colourless. If it looks cloudy, discoloured or contains particles, do not use that pen and contact your prescriber or pharmacist.

Attach a new needle. Remove the outer needle cap and keep it, you'll need it for safe removal afterwards. Peel the paper tab from the needle, screw it straight onto the pen tip until snug (not over-tightened), then remove the inner needle cap and discard it. Now you're ready to prime.

Turn the dose selector to the prime symbol, a small droplet icon on the barrel. Hold the pen with the needle pointing upward. Press and hold the injection button until the dose counter returns to zero, then keep holding for a further ten seconds. You should see a small drop of liquid appear at the needle tip. That drop confirms the pen is primed and ready. Storage, temperature and what affects whether the prime works

Temperature matters more than most people expect.
