Start journey Learn moreNausea is the most common reason people struggle in the first few weeks on Wegovy, but there are practical ways to reduce it. The medicine slows how quickly food leaves your stomach, which is part of how it curbs appetite — and that same mechanism is what makes some people feel queasy, particularly after starting or increasing the dose. Most people find nausea settles within a fortnight, and several straightforward habits make a real difference in the meantime. Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only medicine; a prescriber assesses whether it is right for you before any treatment begins, and they are the right person to talk to if side effects feel unmanageable.

Before deciding how to respond to nausea, it helps to know what is driving it. Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in the gut and brain, slowing gastric emptying so that food sits in the stomach longer. That is central to how Wegovy works for weight loss, but it also means the digestive system needs time to adjust. The feeling is usually strongest in the 24–48 hours after each injection and tends to diminish as your body acclimates to the dose.
The decision you are weighing is this: is what I am experiencing normal adjustment nausea, or something that needs medical attention? These are genuinely different situations, and the guidance below is designed to help you tell them apart. The full picture of Wegovy side effects goes beyond nausea, but nausea is the one that makes people want to give up early, often just before the worst of it would have passed.
According to NHS guidance on semaglutide, gastrointestinal effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation are the most frequently reported side effects, and they are most prominent when the dose is first introduced or increased. Knowing that gives you a reference point: if you are in the first two weeks of a new dose and feeling queasy after meals, that fits the expected pattern.
There is no single trick, but a cluster of small changes tends to make the early weeks more manageable. Eat smaller meals and eat them slowly, sitting with a full plate when your stomach is already emptying slowly is a reliable way to feel worse. Avoid high-fat, fried or heavily spiced food in the days after your injection; these take longer to digest at the best of times. Dry, bland foods like plain crackers, rice or toast are easier to tolerate when nausea peaks.
Timing matters too. Some people find injecting in the evening means the worst of the queasiness passes overnight, rather than during the working day. Others prefer the morning; there is no clinically mandated time, so it is worth experimenting across a few weeks. Staying upright for a while after eating, rather than lying down immediately, also helps. Hydration is easy to neglect when food feels uninviting, sipping water steadily through the day is more useful than trying to drink large amounts at once.
If you are looking at longer-term ways to avoid nausea on Wegovy rather than just managing it acutely, a lot of this advice applies throughout the titration period, not just the first pen. The broader guide to managing Wegovy side effects covers related symptoms that sometimes accompany nausea, including changes in bowel habit.
Most nausea on Wegovy is unpleasant but not dangerous. Some symptoms are different. In January 2026, the MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update highlighting acute pancreatitis as a known, infrequent but serious risk with GLP-1 receptor agonist medicines. The distinguishing symptom is severe, persistent stomach pain that radiates towards the back, which may or may not come with vomiting. That is not ordinary nausea. If you experience it, get medical help the same day, call 111 or go to A&E if the pain is severe.
Other symptoms that should not be left to settle on their own: signs of significant dehydration (very dark urine, dizziness, feeling faint) following repeated vomiting, any allergic reaction including swelling of the face or throat, and persistent vomiting that means you cannot keep fluids down. If you are concerned but unsure, NHS 111 is the right first call. You can also report unexpected or serious side effects directly through the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, and if you suspect a problem is linked to your treatment, reporting it contributes to the ongoing safety monitoring of these medicines.
The detailed guide to Wegovy nausea covers the clinical picture in more depth, including what is known about nausea rates across different dose levels.
A lot of people try to push through nausea quietly, assuming it is just the price of treatment. It does not have to be. If the nausea is affecting your ability to eat, work or sleep, that is worth raising. Your prescriber may slow the titration schedule, which means staying at a lower dose for longer before increasing, a straightforward adjustment that many people find makes the difference between staying on treatment and stopping. They may also consider whether an anti-sickness medicine is appropriate in the short term, though that is a clinical decision made case by case.
At nume, our prescribers discuss side effects and suitability as part of the consultation, not as an afterthought. If something is not working, the right move is to say so. Adjusting pace is a normal part of managing treatment, not a failure. You can also read more about stopping Wegovy nausea specifically before your next conversation, so you go in with a clearer sense of what questions to ask. If you have not yet started treatment and are weighing up whether Wegovy is right for you, the consultation page is the place to begin, a prescriber from our clinical team, reviewed personally by our clinical lead, will look at your full picture the same day. Speak to our prescribers about what to expect before your first pen arrives.
