Start journey Learn moreMost Wegovy side effects can be managed — and many settle on their own within a week or two of starting or increasing your dose. Nausea, loose stools and fatigue are the most commonly reported, and adjusting when and how you eat often makes a real difference. These are prescription-only medicines requiring clinical assessment, so any side effects you're struggling with should be discussed with your prescriber. This page covers the practical steps that help, the signs that need prompt medical attention, and what the evidence actually says about how long discomfort lasts.

The most common thing people think when nausea hits after a Wegovy dose is that their body is rejecting the medicine, or that it means treatment should stop. That's rarely true. Semaglutide slows gastric emptying as part of how it works, your stomach empties more slowly, which is exactly what reduces appetite. The GI effects that come with that are a predictable consequence of the mechanism, not a signal that something has gone wrong.
What the evidence actually shows is that for most people, nausea and related symptoms are most noticeable in the first week or two after starting or going up a dose, then ease off as the body adjusts. The titration schedule exists precisely for this reason: starting at a low dose and moving up in gradual steps gives your system time to adapt. If symptoms are uncomfortable but manageable, staying the course and making some straightforward changes to eating habits is usually all that's needed.
If you're reading this feeling frustrated that something that was supposed to help is making you feel rough, that's completely understandable. It's one of the more honest parts of this treatment that doesn't always get said upfront. The good news is that the tools for managing it are simple, and the discomfort rarely lasts as long as it feels like it will.
For nausea specifically, the most effective adjustments involve how and when you eat rather than any medication. Smaller portions, eaten slowly, are easier for a slower-moving stomach to handle. High-fat meals (things like fried food, heavy sauces, rich pastry) are among the strongest triggers for nausea on semaglutide, so reducing them during the adjustment period is worth trying. Cold or room-temperature food tends to be better tolerated than hot food when nausea is active. The practical steps for managing Wegovy nausea go into more detail on this.
Loose stools and diarrhoea are less talked about but affect a significant proportion of people on GLP-1 medicines. Staying well hydrated matters here (particularly if symptoms are frequent) because dehydration can follow quickly if fluid losses aren't replaced. Plain water, diluted squash and oral rehydration sachets all help. Greasy or spicy food can worsen things; bland, easily digestible meals are generally better tolerated. If diarrhoea is persisting beyond a few days or is severe, see your prescriber rather than waiting it out. You can find more targeted advice on treating diarrhoea on Wegovy including when it warrants a call.
Constipation is almost the opposite problem and can affect people who've had loose stools earlier in treatment. Fibre, fluids and movement are the core tools. Gradually increasing fruit, vegetables and wholegrains, drinking enough water throughout the day, and light regular activity all support bowel regularity. Our page on managing constipation on Wegovy covers the specifics. The NHS semaglutide medicines page also lists common side effects and general advice in plain language.
There is a category of symptom that goes beyond manageable discomfort, and it's important to be direct about it. In January 2026, the MHRA issued a Drug Safety Update highlighting acute pancreatitis as a known but infrequent side effect of GLP-1 medicines including semaglutide. The key symptom is severe stomach pain (often persistent, sometimes radiating toward the back) which may occur with or without vomiting. This is not a normal adjustment symptom. Stop the injection and get urgent medical help if this happens.
Other symptoms that need prompt attention rather than home management include: signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat), symptoms of gallbladder problems (severe pain in the upper right abdomen, jaundice), and significant dehydration following prolonged vomiting or diarrhoea, dizziness on standing, very dark urine, inability to keep fluids down. If you're ever unsure, calling 111 is the right move.
Always let any healthcare professional treating you know that you take Wegovy. This includes if you need surgery, your anaesthetist needs to know, as gastric emptying affects anaesthetic safety. The full Wegovy side effects overview covers the complete list of what's known, with the same split between common and serious.
You can report any suspected side effect (including one you're uncertain about) to the MHRA via the Yellow Card reporting scheme. Patients can submit reports directly; you don't need to go through a doctor first.
Many of the tips covered here work best when they're part of a conversation with your prescriber rather than trial and error on your own. Dose timing, the pace of titration and whether a short pause is appropriate are all decisions that depend on your specific situation. The broader collection of practical tips for Wegovy side effects has further detail on lifestyle adjustments that complement clinical oversight.
At nume, every repeat order is clinically reviewed before dispatch. Side effects you've noticed (however minor) are worth mentioning at that review, because a prescriber can advise on whether the pace of your dose increase makes sense or whether anything warrants further investigation. Our prescribers discuss both suitability and likely side effects as part of the initial consultation too, so you go into treatment knowing what to expect and how to respond. If you'd like to talk through whether Wegovy is the right option for you, check your eligibility through a free consultation.
