Is Mounjaro going up in price in the UK, on the NHS and privately?

You've just seen a much higher price than you expected, here's why

Picture this: you looked up Mounjaro last year, noted the approximate cost, then came back recently to find the number has more than doubled at certain doses. You're not misremembering. From 1 September 2025, Eli Lilly revised its UK list prices substantially. The highest dose pen rose from roughly £122 to roughly £330, as widely reported in August 2025 ahead of the change. Lower doses saw smaller increases, but the direction was the same across the board.

The reason matters. Mounjaro had been priced below comparable markets since its UK launch, and the company brought UK pricing closer to European reference levels. That's the commercial reality. Private pharmacies set their own prices above the list price to cover dispensing, clinical review and other costs. So what you see advertised will typically be higher than the list figures above, and will vary between providers. That variation is worth scrutinising, not just for the number, but for what's included.

On the NHS: price is almost the wrong question to start with

NHS patients who receive Mounjaro pay the standard prescription charge (currently under £10 per item) or nothing if they hold an exemption certificate. That sounds straightforward. The harder question is who qualifies.

NICE approved tirzepatide for NHS use in Technology Appraisal TA1026, published December 2024. The rollout is phased. From June 2025, the first cohort covered people with a BMI of 40 or above and four or more specific weight-related conditions. The second cohort, activated in June 2026, extends to BMI 35–39.9 with four or more of those conditions. Thresholds are 2.5 kg/m² lower for South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean backgrounds.

Even meeting those criteria doesn't guarantee access. Your GP practice has to participate in the 2026/27 contract arrangements, and wrap-around dietary and activity support must be in place. What private prices do and don't include, and why that gap matters

A headline monthly price for Mounjaro can look reassuring until you read the small print. Some advertised prices cover the medicine only. Others add a consultation fee on top. Delivery charges, prescription fees, aftercare access, these can all appear as extras that push the real monthly outlay well above the number in the headline.

It's worth knowing this because when you compare providers, you're often comparing different things. Price is a reasonable question, but it's not the right test for a prescription medicine
