Can you buy semaglutide over the counter in the UK?

Semaglutide (branded as Wegovy for weight management) is classified as a Prescription-Only Medicine under UK law, a prescriber's assessment is always required.
Wegovy is the only semaglutide product licensed in the UK specifically for weight loss; Ozempic carries a type 2 diabetes licence and is not prescribed for weight management.
A single-dose 7.2mg Wegovy pen was approved by the MHRA on 14 April 2026, and oral Wegovy tablets received UK approval on 11 June 2026, both still require a prescription.
You can check whether any online pharmacy is legally registered to supply prescription medicines by searching the GPhC register at pharmacyregulation.org.

Semaglutide is not available over the counter in the UK. It is a Prescription-Only Medicine, which means a qualified prescriber must assess your suitability before it can be legally supplied. No pharmacy — online or on the high street — can hand it over without a valid prescription. Here is what that means in practice, and what your options actually look like.

What the law actually means for how you access semaglutide

Picture the moment you search for it

You have probably arrived here after seeing Wegovy mentioned in the news, or after a friend described losing weight on it. Naturally, you typed something like 'buy semaglutide' or wondered whether a pharmacy might stock it the way they stock paracetamol. It is a reasonable instinct. The short answer is: they cannot, and the reason is straightforward.

Under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012, semaglutide sits firmly in the Prescription-Only category. A pharmacist dispensing it without a valid prescription from a registered prescriber would be breaking the law. That applies to every format, the weekly injection, and the Wegovy tablet approved by the MHRA in June 2026 as the UK's first oral GLP-1 medicine for weight management. Prescription-only status exists precisely because these medicines affect appetite, gastric emptying, blood sugar and other systems that need individual clinical assessment first. The NHS semaglutide medicines page explains the full profile clearly if you want the detail.

So the route is always: clinical assessment first, prescription second, dispensing third. The question worth spending time on is what that assessment looks like and how quickly it can happen.

Why 'over the counter' semaglutide listings are a serious red flag

If you search hard enough, you will find websites claiming to sell semaglutide without requiring a consultation. Some use language designed to blur the line, 'self-certification', 'instant approval', that kind of thing. Treat those listings with real caution.

The MHRA has issued multiple public warnings about counterfeit and illegally traded weight-loss pens. In one enforcement operation, around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines (roughly £45 million street value) were seized. A counterfeit manufacturing site producing fake tirzepatide pens was raided in 2025. Fake pens seized in earlier operations were found to contain insulin rather than the labelled medicine, an error that sent people to hospital. Reporting any suspect seller takes under a minute via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which accepts reports from members of the public as well as healthcare professionals.

The practical check is just as quick: look up any online pharmacy on the GPhC register. A registered pharmacy has a GPhC premises number you can verify in seconds. If it is missing, that tells you everything you need to know. Our own GPhC registration number is 9012878, verifiable at that link.

For more on what availability actually looks like through legitimate routes, the Wegovy over the counter guide covers the landscape in more depth.

The legitimate routes: NHS and private prescription

There are two lawful ways to obtain semaglutide for weight management in the UK, and neither involves buying it off a shelf.

The NHS route runs through specialist weight management services. NICE recommends Wegovy for adults with a BMI of 35 or above plus at least one weight-related condition, used for a maximum of two years within a service that includes dietary and activity support. Waiting lists are commonly long, and NHS criteria are strict. You can read the full recommendation in NICE technology appraisal TA875.

The private route is faster. A GPhC-registered online pharmacy can carry out a clinical consultation remotely (reviewing your medical history, weight, identity and any relevant conditions) and a prescriber issues a prescription if you are clinically suitable. The medicine is then dispensed and delivered. Semaglutide for weight management is not cheap privately; prices vary by dose and provider, and any legitimate price includes the prescription and clinical assessment, not just the medicine itself. If you want to understand what goes into the cost, the Wegovy price comparison guide breaks that down honestly.

Eligibility for a private prescription broadly mirrors the licensed indication: adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or obstructive sleep apnoea. BMI thresholds are 2.5 kg/m² lower for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. A prescriber looks at the whole picture, not the number alone.

What to do if you think semaglutide might be right for you

Start with a consultation from a pharmacy you can verify. At nume, every consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, a real clinician reading your responses, not automated software deciding on your behalf. If you order before noon on a working day and are clinically approved, your treatment is dispatched the same day and delivered free the next working day by DPD, in plain unbranded packaging.

One thing worth knowing before you start: if you are wondering whether Wegovy is available now through the service you are considering, supply has been patchy across the market and that guide gives an honest picture. If you are also curious about whether Wegovy is available in the UK through legitimate channels and what that process currently looks like, that page sets out the position clearly. If you want a broader overview of what semaglutide treatment involves before committing to a consultation, including details on Bachem semaglutide, which is the pharmaceutical-grade active ingredient used in licensed products, the semaglutide treatment page covers the mechanism, the evidence and the process in full.

The short version: semaglutide is not something you can pick up without a prescription, and that boundary exists to protect you. The right starting point is a consultation with a registered prescriber who can say clearly whether it is appropriate for your situation. Check your eligibility with our clinical team if you want to take that step today.
