Needle tips for the Wegovy pen: the practical facts

Wegovy pens do not include needle tips in the box — compatible pen needles must be sourced separately.
Each needle tip should be used once only; reusing a needle blunts the tip, increases injection-site discomfort and raises infection risk.
Needle length matters: most adults use a 4 mm or 5 mm tip, but your prescriber will advise the right size based on your body and technique.
After injection, keep the needle in place for six seconds before withdrawing, then recap and dispose of it in a sharps container straight away.

The Wegovy pre-filled pen does not come with needle tips included — you need to attach a compatible needle tip before each injection, then remove and dispose of it safely afterwards. Knowing the right needle length, how to fit it correctly, and why single-use matters can make a real difference to comfort and effectiveness. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine containing semaglutide, and how you inject it is part of the clinical guidance your prescriber shares with you. The facts below draw on the Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics and the NHS patient information for semaglutide.

Fitting, using and disposing of Wegovy pen needle tips correctly

What the SmPC and NHS guidance actually say about needle tips

The Wegovy SmPC, published on the Electronic Medicines Compendium (eMC), is the definitive technical document on how the pen is used. It confirms that Novo Nordisk's pre-filled Wegovy pen is designed to be used with compatible pen needles, not with any generic syringe. If you are unsure whether you need needles for Wegovy or whether anything comes included with the pen, that page clears up the most common points of confusion. The pen itself auto-selects the right dose; the needle tip is the only part you change.

Recommended needle lengths for most adults fall in the 4 mm to 6 mm range. Shorter tips are generally preferred because subcutaneous tissue (the fatty layer just beneath the skin where semaglutide is delivered) is typically reachable at that depth without angling the pen or pinching the skin. A longer needle increases the chance of hitting muscle rather than subcutaneous tissue, which changes the absorption profile. Your prescriber will confirm the length that suits your body type and the injection site you plan to use.

Novo Nordisk recommends using NovoFine or NovoTwist needles with Wegovy pens because compatibility and sterility are confirmed for those. If you want to understand the full range of options, our page on the Wegovy needle covers compatible types, sizes and what to look for when choosing. If in doubt, ask your prescriber or pharmacist before switching brands.

If you'd like a deeper look at injection site choices and technique, the guide to Wegovy injection technique covers those in detail.

How to attach a needle tip without damaging it

Contamination or bending can happen before the needle even reaches your skin if the attachment step goes wrong. The process is straightforward, but precision matters.

First, check the expiry date on the outer packaging of the needle. Pull off the paper seal, don't unscrew it. Place the outer needle cap flat on a clean, hard surface and press the pen straight down onto it, then screw the needle clockwise until it is firmly attached. Avoid gripping the needle itself at any point.

Remove the outer cap and keep it nearby for the recap after injection. Then remove the inner needle cap and discard that one, don't re-attach the inner cap. The pen is now ready. For a step-by-step walkthrough of the full attachment process, the page on how to put a needle on the Wegovy pen walks through every stage.

One question our prescribers hear most weeks is whether it's safe to attach the needle ahead of time and carry the pen pre-loaded. The answer is no. Attaching the needle tip before you're ready to inject risks contamination, accidental priming and leakage. Attach, inject, recap and remove, all in one sitting.

Once the injection is done, hold the pen in place for a full six seconds before withdrawing. This lets the dose disperse fully rather than leaking back up the needle track. Then use the outer cap you set aside to cover the needle one-handed before unscrewing and disposing. Our tips for injecting Wegovy go into further detail on technique, including how to hold the pen and avoid common errors at this final stage.

Single-use rule and safe disposal

Reusing a needle tip is one of the most common injection mistakes, and it carries real consequences. A needle that has already pierced skin is no longer sterile. The tip itself, seen under magnification, becomes barbed after a single use, meaning each subsequent injection causes more trauma to the tissue. Over time, that leads to lipohypertrophy (fatty lumps under the skin at injection sites), which affects how reliably the medicine is absorbed.

Dispose of used needle tips in a proper sharps container immediately after removing them from the pen. Household bins, toilet flushing and recapping into a regular lid are not safe disposal routes. A 1-litre sharps container is the standard size for home use and can be collected by your local authority once full. Wegovy pen needles themselves are stocked as a 100-pack of compatible pen needles if you need a reliable supply.

If you need to travel with your Wegovy pen, the pen can be carried in hand luggage with appropriate documentation. Keep needle tips in their sealed packaging until use; dispose of used tips in a travel sharps container or ask your airline and destination country's guidance on disposal. The Wegovy overview page has broader context on travelling with the pen and storage requirements.

A note on eligibility and getting started

Wegovy is licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes. Lower BMI thresholds may apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance. It is a prescription-only medicine, a qualified prescriber must assess your suitability before any treatment begins, reviewing your medical history, current medicines and any contraindications. No injection technique page replaces that clinical step.

If you're exploring your options and want to understand more about what's available, the weight-loss treatment overview sets out the licensed medicines currently dispensed through our pharmacy. At nume every consultation is reviewed by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber, not an automated system, on the day you submit it.

If suitability is confirmed, treatment is dispatched the same day for orders placed before 12pm on a working day, arriving the following working day via DPD in plain, unbranded packaging. Check your eligibility with a free consultation whenever you're ready.
