Rybelsus semaglutide tablets: licensed for diabetes, not weight loss

What exactly is Rybelsus and how does it work?

Rybelsus is a brand of oral semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk. Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist: it mimics a gut hormone that signals fullness, slows gastric emptying and supports blood-sugar control. In the Rybelsus formulation, semaglutide is combined with SNAC (sodium N-(8-[2-hydroxybenzoyl]amino)caprylate) an absorption enhancer that allows a small proportion of the semaglutide to cross the stomach lining into the bloodstream when the tablet is taken on an empty stomach.

The UK strengths are 3 mg, 7 mg and 14 mg. Treatment typically starts at 3 mg for a month to aid tolerability, then moves to 7 mg, with 14 mg as the maximum therapeutic dose for diabetes. Is Rybelsus the same as Ozempic, and where does Wegovy fit in?

All three (Rybelsus, Ozempic and Wegovy) contain semaglutide, which is why the names are often conflated. They are not the same product. Ozempic is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection licensed for type 2 diabetes. Rybelsus is a daily tablet, also for type 2 diabetes. Presenting it, or obtaining it, for that purpose would mean using a diabetes medicine outside its approved indication, something a responsible prescriber won't do without strong clinical reason and explicit documentation. The oral semaglutide product that IS licensed for weight loss is Wegovy tablets. What does the clinical evidence say, and why does the licensing distinction matter in practice?

Rybelsus was studied and approved on the strength of its blood-sugar lowering effect in people with type 2 diabetes. The weight outcomes observed in those trials were secondary findings; the MHRA did not grant Rybelsus a weight-management licence on that basis. Wegovy tablets, by contrast, were approved on 11 June 2026 after the OASIS 4 phase 3 trial in adults with obesity or overweight plus at least one weight-related condition: participants lost an average of around 13.6% of body weight over 64 weeks, with those who adhered fully to treatment averaging close to 17%, results assessed specifically for that population and that indication.
