The phrase 'slimming drug' follows Mounjaro everywhere online, and it's understandable why. The results from clinical trials were striking enough that the medicine became a topic of conversation well beyond medical circles. But the label can give the impression of something quick or cosmetic, and that's not what tirzepatide is.

Mounjaro is a prescription medicine licensed specifically for weight management in adults for whom excess weight is a clinical problem. It works by mimicking two hormones (GIP and GLP-1) that the gut releases after eating. Both slow the movement of food out of the stomach and signal to the brain that you've eaten enough. The common misconception worth letting go of gently is that these medicines do the work while you eat normally. The trial evidence is genuinely substantial. SURMOUNT-1 followed 2,539 adults with obesity but without type 2 diabetes for 72 weeks. At the 15 mg dose, average body-weight reduction was around 20–21%. Who the slimming drug licence actually covers, and what tips people outside it

The UK licence for Mounjaro in weight management covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above combined with at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea or osteoarthritis. Under-18s are outside the licensed population, as are people who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive.

BMI alone is not the whole story. The prescriber looks at your full picture: other medicines you take (some interact), your medical history, and conditions where tirzepatide needs extra care or is not appropriate.
