Tirzepatide tablets online: what the evidence shows and how the UK route works

What the NICE appraisal and trial data say about tirzepatide — and why the delivery form matters

NICE's appraisal of tirzepatide (TA1026, published December 2024) drew heavily on the SURMOUNT-1 trial, a 72-week study involving 2,539 adults with obesity. At the 15 mg maintenance dose, participants lost an average of around 20–21% of their body weight, a result that influenced NICE's recommendation for adults with a BMI of 35 or above and at least one weight-related condition. A separate head-to-head study, SURMOUNT-5, later reported greater average weight reduction with tirzepatide than with once-weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg over 72 weeks.

These results were produced with the subcutaneous injection. Oral bioavailability of GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonists is a genuine pharmacological challenge: the gut degrades peptide molecules before they reach systemic circulation. Novo Nordisk solved it for semaglutide by co-formulating the drug with an absorption enhancer called SNAC — a process that took years of development. Eli Lilly has not yet filed for MHRA approval of an oral tirzepatide formulation; phase 3 trials for an oral version are under way, but regulatory submission and review timelines mean a licensed UK tablet is not imminent. The practical point is this: the evidence supporting tirzepatide's efficacy (the figures NICE cited, the results that convinced a regulator) all come from the injection. Assuming a tablet would produce identical outcomes is not supported by published data, because none exists for a licensed product.

What is actually available as an oral GLP-1 option in the UK right now

If you are specifically looking to avoid injections, the evidence-based licensed alternative is the Wegovy tablet. The MHRA approved oral semaglutide (Wegovy tablets) on 11 June 2026, making the UK the first country in Europe to licence an oral GLP-1 medicine for weight management. Its phase 3 trial, OASIS 4, ran for 64 weeks across 307 adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related condition. Average weight loss was approximately 13.6% versus around 2.4% on placebo; among participants who stayed fully adherent to the regimen, the figure was closer to 17%. That 17% figure only applies to the adherent subgroup, it is not the headline average.

The dosing schedule starts at 1.5 mg once daily and escalates through 4 mg and 9 mg to a 25 mg maintenance dose, with at least a month at each level. The tablet is taken first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small amount of plain water, and you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines. No refrigeration is needed, which makes travel considerably more straightforward than managing injection pens. Red flags to recognise when searching for tirzepatide tablets online

The MHRA has issued multiple warnings about weight-loss medicines sold online without a prescription. In October 2025, enforcement teams raided an illicit UK manufacturing site in Northampton producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens, alongside separate seizures totalling approximately 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines. Tablets are a newer target, partly because they look less technically demanding to counterfeit than an auto-injector pen, and partly because demand for an oral option is high.

A practical check you can do in under a minute: visit the GPhC's online pharmacy register and search the seller's name. If they do not appear, stop. Any UK pharmacy legally dispensing a prescription medicine must be GPhC-registered. A legitimate pharmacy will not offer tirzepatide tablets, because no such licensed product exists here yet. If a site tells you otherwise, that is the red flag, not the reassurance.
