Wegovy: how much is it, and what does the price actually cover?

What the published Wegovy price range actually reflects

NICE recommended semaglutide for weight management in its technology appraisal TA875, and the clinical trial that underpinned approval (STEP 1, published in the New England Journal of Medicine) reported around 15% average body-weight reduction at the 2.4mg maintenance dose over 68 weeks. That evidence base is part of why demand pushed private prices upward, and why the market is now more expensive than it was two years ago.

Treatment starts at 0.25mg and is titrated by a prescriber through 0.5mg, 1.0mg and 1.7mg toward the 2.4mg maintenance dose, each step roughly four weeks apart. Pricing almost always reflects the dose pen you actually need at each stage, so how much 1mg Wegovy costs differs from the cost at 2.4mg, and a provider quoting a low entry figure may be quoting the lowest starting-dose pen only. By the time most patients reach maintenance, they are paying the higher end of the range.

The MHRA also approved a 7.2mg single-dose pen in April 2026, the highest Wegovy dose available, trials reported around 20.7% average weight loss at this level. Availability and pricing for this format vary by clinic; specifics are confirmed at consultation.

What a headline price often leaves out

A private prescription for Wegovy involves more than the pen. Yet advertised prices frequently strip out the consultation fee, the prescription charge, delivery costs and any ongoing clinical support. Add those separately and the actual monthly outlay can be meaningfully higher than the figure in the advert.

Some providers charge per consultation for every dose change. Others add a separate prescription fee on top of the medicine price. Delivery may be standard rather than tracked, or charged at a flat rate per order. Aftercare (someone to contact if side effects are difficult, or if you need a clinical decision about pausing treatment) is sometimes a premium add-on rather than standard practice.

The cost of a Wegovy pen is only one part of the picture. Understanding what the full monthly cost looks like, including everything needed to use treatment safely, is a better basis for comparison than the lowest figure on a comparison table.

Why cheapest is the wrong way to compare prescription weight-loss medicines

The MHRA has documented counterfeit Wegovy, Ozempic and tirzepatide pens circulating in the UK, including fake pens containing insulin rather than the stated medicine. Some hospitalisations have resulted. Enforcement operations in 2025 resulted in seizures of roughly 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines worth around £45 million. The pattern is consistent: very low prices, sellers operating outside the licensed supply chain, and no genuine prescriber involved.
