Who the pen is licensed for, and what sits outside that licence

In the UK, Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 to 29.9 with at least one weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or obstructive sleep apnoea. It is not licensed for anyone under 18, and it is not recommended during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or if a patient is trying to conceive. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, or with MEN2, should not use it; a history of pancreatitis requires careful prescriber assessment before starting.

Ozempic contains the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but its UK licence covers type 2 diabetes management, not weight loss. The Wegovy multi-dose pen is also distinct from the oral semaglutide tablet (Wegovy tablets) approved by the MHRA in June 2026.
