Step 1: Understand what is already inside the pen

Step 2: Choose your injection site and prepare the skin

Licensed injection sites for Wegovy are the abdomen, the front of the thigh, or the upper arm. Rotating between sites week to week reduces localised skin changes over time. Pick a spot at least two centimetres from your navel if using the abdomen, and avoid areas where the skin is broken, bruised or thickened from previous injections.

Cleaning the skin before injecting is standard practice. Alcohol swabs work well; let the area dry for a few seconds before pressing the pen in, because injecting through wet skin can sting more than it needs to.

Step 3: Deliver the dose and hold the pen in place

Press the pen firmly against the prepared skin until you hear or feel it click, then hold it there. You will see a small window on the pen change to confirm the dose has been delivered.

The full titration schedule (starting at 0.25mg and increasing every four weeks up to the 2.4mg maintenance dose, or the newer 7.2mg maintenance dose for eligible patients) is set by your prescriber, not by the pen format. Step 4: Dispose of the pen safely

Once the pen is empty (after its four weekly doses) it becomes clinical waste. It goes into a rigid sharps container, not a standard bin bag. Most community pharmacies accept used sharps containers for disposal, and your local council may run a collection scheme. This is not optional: loose sharps in household waste create a genuine injury risk for refuse collectors.
