Start journey Learn moreWegovy must be stored in a refrigerator at 2–8°C until you are ready to use it. That is the core rule. A pen kept outside this range for longer than the window permitted in the Patient Information Leaflet may degrade, and a degraded pen will not work as expected — so this is worth getting right from the moment your delivery arrives. As a prescription-only medicine, Wegovy is supplied through a regulated UK pharmacy following a clinical assessment; what happens to it once it reaches your fridge is your responsibility, and these steps make that straightforward.

Your Wegovy pen arrives refrigerated, packaged to maintain temperature during transit. The moment it reaches you, transfer it to your fridge. Place it in the main body of the fridge rather than the door shelf, which is the warmest part and subject to temperature swings every time the door opens. Aim for a consistent 2–8°C, most domestic fridges run in this range, but it is worth checking yours with a thermometer if you have any doubts.
Do not put the pen in the freezer compartment or rest it against the ice-box wall at the back of the fridge. Freezing destroys the active medicine, and a pen that has been frozen cannot be thawed and used. If you receive a pen that feels frozen or contains ice crystals, treat it as unusable and contact your pharmacy.
The NHS guidance on semaglutide is clear on these points: refrigerate promptly, avoid freezing, and keep it away from heat and light. That advice costs nothing to follow and protects the full value of your treatment.
Most patients discover at some point that they left their pen out overnight, forgot it on a surface, or simply want to bring it to room temperature before injecting. If you have ever found yourself unsure about what the Wegovy storage requirements mean in practice, the key starting point is the Patient Information Leaflet, which specifies a maximum time a single pen may be kept at room temperature (below 30°C) before it must be used or discarded. That figure is printed in the leaflet for your specific batch, and it is the authoritative number, not a forum post, not a general rule of thumb.
The reason to read the actual leaflet rather than rely on a remembered figure is that the permitted window can differ between product versions and has been updated over time. Rather than state a single number here and risk it being out of date for your pen, we direct you firmly to the PIL that comes in your box. If you have lost it, the eMC (electronic Medicines Compendium) holds the current Wegovy SmPC, which includes the same storage information.
One practical note our prescribers hear regularly: people worry that taking the pen out of the fridge 15–30 minutes before injecting to reduce injection discomfort will invalidate it. It will not, provided the total out-of-fridge time remains within the leaflet's stated window. Keep a rough mental note of how long each pen has spent at room temperature across all occasions, not just the final one.
For a deeper look at how temperature rules apply when you are away from home, storage during travel covers what to use and what to avoid.
Before you inject, hold the pen up to the light. The solution should be clear and colourless to slightly yellow; do not use it if it looks cloudy, contains particles, or has changed colour. That visual check takes three seconds and matters.
After injecting your dose, recap the pen and return it to the fridge. Each Wegovy pen contains four weekly doses; you will use it over the course of a month before starting the next one. Do not transfer the liquid between pens or attempt to use a pen beyond its four-dose capacity.
Used needles must be disposed of safely in an approved sharps container, never in general household waste. Sharps containers are available without a prescription and are a straightforward part of managing injectable treatment at home.
If you are new to Wegovy and wondering how storage fits into the broader picture of starting treatment, the Wegovy overview page covers licensing, eligibility and what to expect in the first weeks. Questions about how semaglutide compares to other injectable options can be explored through the weight-loss treatments overview.
Things happen. A power cut takes your fridge offline overnight; you leave the pen in a hot car; you realise you packed the wrong bag for a weekend away. These are real situations, and the right response is always the same: do not guess, do not inject, contact your pharmacist or prescriber first.
A pen that has been outside its required temperature range for an unknown or excessive time should be treated as compromised. The cost of discarding a pen is real and frustrating, we understand that. But injecting a degraded medicine carries a different risk: it may not work, or it may cause unexpected reactions. Neither outcome is acceptable when a quick call resolves the uncertainty.
If you need to check on your Wegovy supply or have a storage question outside standard hours, our support team is available seven days a week. The FAQs page also covers common practical queries about treatment at home.
For broader questions about semaglutide storage across different products and forms, how semaglutide refrigeration works gives a product-by-product breakdown. Patients often ask whether Wegovy requires refrigeration throughout its entire shelf life, and that page addresses the question in full. You can also find a detailed guide to how Wegovy refrigeration applies at each stage of use, from delivery through to your final dose.
