Wegovy storage requirements: what every pen needs to stay effective

Wegovy pens must be refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C — never frozen; a frozen pen must be discarded.
Once out of the fridge, pens may be used within the room-temperature window specified in the Patient Information Leaflet; after that window closes, they must be thrown away even if doses remain.
Keep pens away from direct heat, sunlight and light sources; the outer carton provides an extra layer of protection.
Always check the pen visually before injecting, the solution should be clear and colourless to slightly yellow; do not use it if it looks cloudy, discoloured or contains particles.

Wegovy must be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C until you are ready to use it. Once removed from the fridge, each pen can be kept at room temperature below 30°C for a limited period — the exact window is stated in your Patient Information Leaflet, and following it precisely protects the medicine's effectiveness. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a prescriber decides whether it is clinically right for you before any treatment begins.

The storage decisions that protect your treatment from the moment it arrives

The choice between fridge and room temperature, and why it matters

The active ingredient in Wegovy, semaglutide, is a biological medicine. Biological medicines are sensitive to temperature in a way that small-molecule tablets simply are not. Too cold and the protein structure degrades; too warm for too long and the same thing happens. Neither outcome is visible to the naked eye, which is exactly why the instructions exist.

Under normal circumstances, your pen lives in the fridge. The refrigeration conditions for Wegovy are 2°C to 8°C, a standard domestic fridge setting. Store pens in their original carton, away from the back wall or the ice compartment, where accidental freezing is most likely. A frozen pen is a discarded pen; there is no way to recover it.

Room-temperature storage is allowed for a defined period when refrigeration is not available, such as during travel or at work. The exact duration is printed in your Patient Information Leaflet because the MHRA-approved SmPC is the authoritative document for that figure, and it should not be paraphrased or approximated. Once the room-temperature window closes, the pen goes in a sharps container, not the bin, not back in the fridge.

One habit worth building: each time you open a new pen, note the date somewhere quick to find, the back of the carton, a phone note, your calendar. Thirty seconds of admin now prevents a longer conversation later about whether a pen is still usable.

What counts as an unsafe temperature, and what to do

Direct sunlight through a window can push a windowsill or car dashboard well above 30°C within minutes. A glove box in summer is an obvious hazard; so is leaving a cool bag unsealed on a hot day. If you have ever wondered whether Wegovy actually needs to be kept refrigerated, the answer is yes under normal conditions, and the reasons become clear once you understand how semaglutide behaves outside the cold chain. Wegovy pens should never be placed next to a radiator, left in a car in warm weather, or stored in a bathroom where steam from a shower regularly raises the ambient temperature.

The NHS medicines page for semaglutide reinforces that the pen must not be frozen and should be kept out of direct sunlight, practical anchors that apply whether you are at home or away. If you are unsure whether a pen has been stored correctly, the right call is to contact the pharmacy or your prescriber rather than inject it and hope.

Wegovy pens should also be kept out of reach of children. The auto-inject mechanism and the medication inside both make accidental use a serious risk. A locked or high-shelf medicine cabinet is the simplest solution.

If your pen has been accidentally left out of the fridge overnight and the room was cool, our guidance on Wegovy storage temperatures can help you assess whether the conditions were within the acceptable range before you make a decision. When there is any doubt, speak to the pharmacist who dispensed it.

Travelling with your Wegovy pen

Travel is the situation that catches most people out, and it is worth thinking through before you leave rather than at the airport. A dedicated travel cool bag with an ice pack keeps the pen within the safe range for a flight or a long car journey. The ice pack itself should not touch the pen directly, wrapping it in a cloth layer avoids the small risk of the pen surface getting too cold.

Flying raises a separate question: can you take the pen through security? In the UK, injectable medicines are generally permitted in hand luggage with appropriate documentation. Carry your prescription or a dispensing label, and if travelling internationally, check the rules for your destination in advance. Checked luggage in the hold can reach very low temperatures at altitude, so the pen is better kept with you.

For longer trips, reading up on how fridge storage works for Wegovy gives you the confidence to plan properly, including what to look for when you return home and put your pen back into the cold chain. The key number remains the same wherever you are: the pen cannot go above 30°C for more than the stated period, and it cannot freeze at any point.

Maintaining lifestyle habits during treatment is part of the picture too. Our overview of weight-loss treatments covers what the evidence says about combining medicine with activity and dietary changes.

Disposing of your pen safely, and keeping your supply in good order

A used Wegovy pen (or one that has exceeded its temperature or time limits) needs to go into an approved sharps container. Needles and pen bodies should never go into household recycling or a standard bin, where they pose a risk to anyone handling waste. Many GP surgeries and some pharmacies accept filled sharps containers for disposal; your local council's clinical waste collection service is another option.

Keeping your supply organised also means not stockpiling pens beyond what you need. Wegovy is dispensed on a clinical-review basis, so each order with a regulated pharmacy involves an assessment of your progress and current dose. That structure means you are unlikely to be sitting on a large surplus, but if your circumstances change and you have pens you will not use, contact your pharmacy rather than passing them on informally. Prescription medicines should not be shared. Our full guide to Wegovy storage brings together all of these rules in one place, which can be useful to revisit whenever your dose changes or your routine shifts.

If you have questions about how your treatment is going, the team at nume offers aftercare support seven days a week. And if you are still exploring whether Wegovy is the right option for you, our guide comparing weight loss injections including Ozempic sets out how the available treatments differ so you can have a more informed conversation with your prescriber.
