How long does Wegovy last in the fridge — and when does it stop being safe to use?

The fridge rule and what 2–8°C actually means in practice

Most household fridges sit somewhere between 3°C and 5°C in the main compartment, which puts them comfortably inside the 2–8°C range Wegovy requires. The danger zones are the fridge door and the shelf nearest the ice compartment. The door is subject to temperature swings every time it opens, not ideal for a medicine that needs stable cold storage. The shelf closest to the freezer can drop below 2°C without warning, and a pen that has frozen should not be used, full stop. A middle shelf, towards the back, is usually the most stable spot.

One practical detail worth knowing: many people keep their pen on the same fridge shelf as their milk and leftovers, which is fine, but placing it in the door (convenient as that feels) introduces more variability than the medicine ideally wants. If you live with other people, a small labelled container on a middle shelf keeps the pen visible and protected from accidental mishandling.

The expiry date on the carton and the pen barrel assumes continuous refrigerated storage. The room-temperature window: a separate clock, not an extension of shelf life

When a Wegovy pen comes out of the fridge, a new countdown begins. This window is not an extension of the refrigerated shelf life; it is a separate, shorter limit set by the manufacturer and confirmed in the SmPC. The specific number of days varies depending on which pen format you have, the standard 2.4mg pen and the newer single-dose 7.2mg pen, approved by the MHRA on 14 April 2026, may carry different instructions.

Because the room-temperature window is format-specific and subject to revision, the only figure you should act on is the one printed in your leaflet. One point that catches people out: returning a pen to the fridge after it has been at room temperature does not reset the room-temperature clock. The days the pen spent out of the fridge still count. Spotting a pen that should not be used

Beyond dates and temperature logs, there are visual checks worth doing each time. Wegovy solution should be clear and colourless to slightly yellow. If it looks cloudy, contains visible particles, or has changed colour, do not inject it, discard it and contact your prescriber or our aftercare team before your next dose. A pen that has been frozen may look normal but will still be compromised; if you are unsure whether your pen reached freezing temperature, err on the side of caution.

Pens should always be stored with the needle cap on, away from children, and not in a gym bag or car glove box where heat or impact can affect them. Putting it together: the decision about whether to use a pen

Storage questions often arise at a specific moment: you have pulled the pen from the fridge, noticed something feels off, and want a quick answer. The cleanest framework is this. First, check the expiry date, if it has passed, stop there. Second, if the pen has been out of the fridge, check against the room-temperature window in your leaflet, accounting for all the time it has spent unrefrigerated. Third, inspect the solution visually. If any of those checks raises a concern, do not use the pen.
