Weight Loss Pills Similar to Wegovy: What the UK Market Really Looks Like

Lots of people start their search hoping to avoid injections entirely. That's understandable. Until recently, anyone wanting a GLP-1 medicine for weight management had no pill option at all; the injection was the only route. That changed on 11 June 2026, when the MHRA approved Wegovy weight loss pills as the first oral GLP-1 licensed for weight management in the UK, and the first in Europe.

The tablet contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient as the Wegovy weight loss tablets offered by injection, combined with an absorption enhancer called SNAC that allows it to work through the gut lining. The dosing ladder runs from 1.5mg up through 4mg and 9mg to a 25mg daily maintenance dose, with at least a month spent at each level. You take it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach with a small amount of plain water, then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other oral medicines. No refrigeration needed, which makes it genuinely travel-friendly in a way the injection is not.

The MHRA approval followed a phase 3 trial (OASIS 4, 307 adults, 64 weeks) that reported around 13.6% average weight loss versus roughly 2.4% on placebo. Among participants who stayed fully adherent to the regimen, the figure reached approximately 16.6%. Why Rybelsus isn't the same thing, even though both are oral semaglutide

This is the most common confusion our prescribers field. Rybelsus tablets also contain semaglutide and also come as a daily oral dose (3mg, 7mg, or 14mg) but they are licensed for type 2 diabetes, not weight management. The dose ranges don't overlap with Wegovy tablets, the indications are different, and they can't be swapped for one another. If you've seen references to 3mg, 7mg or 14mg oral semaglutide in a weight-loss context, those are Rybelsus strengths being misapplied; the licensed weight-loss tablet doses are 1.5mg, 4mg, 9mg and 25mg only.

It matters because using a diabetes medicine off-label for weight management is outside the terms of its UK licence, and a legitimate prescriber won't do it. If a seller is offering you 3mg or 7mg oral semaglutide for weight loss, that's a red flag, not a deal.

The distinction applies to injections too: Ozempic is also semaglutide, also made by Novo Nordisk, but licensed for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy injection (and now Wegovy tablets) carry the weight management licence. The brand name tells you the intended use.

Orlistat: the older oral option that works differently

Before Wegovy tablets, orlistat was the only licensed oral medicine for weight management available in the UK. It works by a completely different mechanism: it inhibits the enzyme (lipase) that breaks down dietary fat in the gut, so roughly a third of the fat you eat passes through rather than being absorbed. It doesn't touch appetite or blood sugar in the way GLP-1 medicines do.

Orlistat comes in two strengths, 60mg (available over the counter as Alli) and 120mg (prescription-only as Xenical, or as generic orlistat). Clinical results are more modest than those seen with oral semaglutide, and side effects are largely gastrointestinal: oily stools and an urgent need to use the bathroom are common, particularly if fat intake stays high. It's worth knowing about, but it's a different class of treatment from the GLP-1 medicines.
