Start journey Learn moreIn the UK, no insurance company covers Wegovy in the way US health plans sometimes do, because the NHS and private health insurance work very differently here. Wegovy — the brand name for semaglutide 2.4mg — is a prescription-only weight-loss medicine licensed in the UK for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 and above alongside a weight-related health condition. Access comes either through NHS specialist services (if you meet phased eligibility criteria) or through a regulated private pharmacy after a clinical consultation. Private health insurers in the UK very rarely cover weight-loss medicines on their standard policies, and a prescriber must always assess your suitability before any prescription is issued. Understanding how that access actually works (and why the US insurance question doesn't translate directly to UK patients) is what this page covers.

Most searches asking which insurance company covers Wegovy come from a US context, where employer health plans and Medicaid sometimes reimburse semaglutide for weight loss, though even there, coverage is patchy and often requires prior authorisation. The UK does not use that model. Instead, the cost of medicines is managed either by the NHS (free at the point of use, funded through taxation) or paid privately out of pocket or, occasionally, by a private health policy.
UK private health insurers (companies such as Bupa, AXA Health and Vitality) are not obliged to cover weight-loss medicines, and most standard policies exclude them explicitly. A small number of premium corporate or top-tier individual plans have begun including GLP-1 medicines in specialist add-ons, but this is far from the norm. If you hold a private health policy and want to know your position, the practical step is to call your insurer directly and ask whether semaglutide for weight management falls within your specific policy schedule. Do not assume coverage exists.
To understand more about how semaglutide works as a medicine before exploring access routes, the semaglutide overview on this site covers the mechanism and licensed indications in plain language.
For patients who meet the criteria, the NHS is the most straightforward funding route. NICE's technology appraisal TA875 recommends semaglutide (Wegovy) for adults with a BMI of 35 or above and at least one weight-related comorbidity, used for a maximum of two years within a specialist weight management service that includes multidisciplinary support. Ethnic background thresholds are typically 2.5 kg/m² lower, so 32.5 rather than 35 for many South Asian, Chinese, Middle Eastern, Black African and African-Caribbean backgrounds, as noted in NICE's recommendation for semaglutide (TA875).
In practice, NHS referral pathways vary considerably by region. Waiting lists for specialist weight management services can be long, and your GP remains the starting point. If you have already been assessed and are curious about the Wegovy product itself, the Wegovy treatment page explains the licensed dosing schedule and what to expect from the pen.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have separate commissioning arrangements, so eligibility thresholds differ across the four nations. The NHS England overview of weight management injections sets out the current English position in detail.
For patients who do not meet NHS thresholds, who prefer not to wait, or whose GP practice is not yet participating in the new GP prescribing contract, a private regulated pharmacy is the other legal path. This is where questions about cost become relevant. The manufacturer Eli Lilly raised Mounjaro's UK list price significantly from September 2025, and semaglutide pricing has followed market movement, typical private prices for Wegovy have ranged roughly £150 to £375 a month depending on the dose and the provider, as widely reported. For a fuller picture of what drives those figures and what a legitimate price should include, the Wegovy insurance and cost guide works through the detail.
It is worth knowing that legitimate private treatment always includes a clinical consultation and a prescriber's assessment. A price that bundles no clinical review is a red flag, not a bargain. The MHRA has warned repeatedly that weight-loss pens sold online without proper clinical oversight carry real safety risks, including counterfeit products that have caused hospitalisations.
If you are considering the private route and want to understand what different providers include (or don't) the guide to insurances that cover Wegovy looks at the policy landscape in more detail. For background on the company behind the medicine, who makes Wegovy covers Novo Nordisk's role and authorised UK supply, and if you want to read more about the Wegovy company itself, that page goes into further detail on its background and structure. And if you want to explore all available weight-loss treatment options before deciding, the weight loss treatments overview is a sensible place to take stock.
One practical note on timing: if you are planning to start treatment privately and want your prescription before a bank holiday or a period when you will be away, ordering by noon on a working day matters, dispatch that day is only possible within that window, and some holidays catch people out if they plan too close to the date.
Whether you go through a private pharmacy or a GP-led NHS pathway, a qualified prescriber must assess your suitability. At nume, that assessment is carried out by a GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber (a real clinician, not automated software) on the same day you submit your consultation. Identity is verified with photo ID, weight is confirmed on a live video call, and your GP is notified in line with GPhC guidance.
There are no subscriptions: every repeat order goes through a fresh clinical review. If you have questions before starting, the FAQs cover common pre-treatment queries, and the about us page explains the clinical team's background. Our clinical lead's profile is available at the clinical team page for anyone who wants to know who is signing off prescriptions. When you are ready, start your free consultation and a prescriber will review your information the same day.
