When people ask what semaglutide is made out of, they're often trying to decide how comfortable they feel about taking it. Is it a chemical compound with no relation to human biology? Is it derived from animals? The honest answer is reassuring but a little more nuanced than a yes or no.
Semaglutide is a peptide (a short chain of amino acids) that mimics a hormone your intestines release naturally every time you eat. That hormone, GLP-1, signals to your brain that you've had enough food and tells your stomach to slow down. The natural version lasts only a couple of minutes before enzymes break it down. Semaglutide's designers kept 94% of that natural sequence and made targeted modifications to the remaining parts to stop those enzymes working on it so quickly.
One of those modifications attaches a fatty acid chain to the molecule. That chain binds loosely to albumin, a protein abundant in your blood, which acts as a kind of slow-release anchor. The result is a half-life of roughly a week, which is why a single injection covers seven days. So semaglutide is not natural in the sense of being found in food or plants, and it is not synthetic in the sense of being entirely foreign to your biology. It sits in between: a carefully engineered version of something your own body already makes.
The manufacturing story is worth knowing because it shapes what the medicine is, and isn't, made from. Semaglutide is produced using recombinant DNA technology. In practice, that means the genetic instructions for building the semaglutide peptide are inserted into yeast cells, a strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the same species used in baking and brewing. Those cells are grown in large fermentation vessels and, as they multiply, they produce the peptide. It is then extracted, purified and modified with the fatty acid chain.
This approach means semaglutide is not derived from pigs, cows, or any other animal. It contains no gluten-derived ingredients in the final medicine. Novo Nordisk, who manufactures Wegovy, uses this fermentation route for semaglutide precisely because it allows consistent, scalable production of a complex molecule. The final injectable product, Wegovy, suspends the semaglutide peptide in a liquid solution inside a pre-filled pen. Understanding the composition helps explain some practical things patients notice. Because semaglutide is a peptide, it cannot be absorbed through the gut wall in its standard injectable form, stomach acid and digestive enzymes would break it down before it reached the bloodstream. That's why the injection exists. The oral Wegovy tablet (approved by the MHRA in June 2026) pairs the semaglutide molecule with a special absorption enhancer called SNAC, which protects it across the stomach lining.
Once in the bloodstream, semaglutide binds to GLP-1 receptors in the brain's appetite centres and in the gastrointestinal tract. Gastric emptying slows, hunger signals quieten. It does not change your metabolism directly or burn fat through a thermogenic effect; the weight loss comes from eating less, more easily. Because the molecule resembles a natural hormone rather than a foreign chemical, the body's receptors recognise and respond to it. That familiarity also explains the side-effect profile: most are gastrointestinal (nausea, loose stools, slowed digestion) because those are the systems GLP-1 naturally influences. They tend to settle once the body adjusts.
