Start journey Learn moreWegovy (semaglutide) must be stored in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C until you are ready to use it. Once removed from the fridge, the pen can be kept at room temperature below 30°C, but only for a limited period — the exact window is specified in the Patient Information Leaflet and the Wegovy Summary of Product Characteristics on the eMC. Temperature matters because exposure to heat or freezing can degrade the medicine before you ever inject it. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine; a GPhC-registered prescriber assesses whether it is clinically suitable for you before any treatment begins. Understanding how to store Wegovy correctly from the moment your pen arrives is one of the most practical things you can do to protect your treatment.

The licensed storage conditions for Wegovy are set out in the SmPC, which is the authoritative document the MHRA reviews as part of every medicine approval. The requirement is refrigeration at 2°C to 8°C, the range a standard domestic fridge should maintain. That figure is not arbitrary: semaglutide is a protein-based molecule, and temperatures outside this band accelerate breakdown in ways that cannot be reversed or detected by looking at the pen.
Freezing is an absolute discard trigger. If a Wegovy pen has been frozen (even briefly, even if it then thawed and looks normal) it should not be used. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide reinforces this, noting that pens exposed to freezing temperatures must be thrown away. There is no visual test that can confirm whether the active ingredient remains intact after freeze damage.
The room-temperature allowance exists because real life does not always involve a fridge. After a pen is taken out, it can be kept below 30°C for a specific number of days, but that number is printed in your Patient Information Leaflet, and it is the figure you should rely on. Citing a general day-count here would risk contradicting the version of the leaflet supplied with your pen, which is the one that counts legally. When in doubt, re-read the leaflet or speak to your prescriber.
Not all parts of a fridge run at the same temperature. The door shelves (where most households instinctively place small medical items) are consistently the warmest zone, frequently nudging above 8°C during normal use. The back of a middle or lower shelf stays closest to the set temperature.
Keep Wegovy pens in their original carton while refrigerated. The packaging provides a degree of light protection and makes it less likely the pen will be accidentally frozen against the rear wall, which is where ice can form in older appliances. A small, labelled container on a middle shelf works well for most people.
If you are ordering treatment and wondering about delivery conditions, consistent temperature during transit is worth understanding. Reputable UK pharmacies use tracked, temperature-appropriate packaging, at nume, pens are dispensed from our GPhC-registered pharmacy and sent via DPD next working day in plain, properly packed parcels. Once your pen arrives, transfer it to the fridge promptly rather than leaving it on a warm hallway shelf.
One practical note on timing: if you order close to a bank holiday or plan to travel the week your pen arrives, factor in the room-temperature window from the leaflet before assuming the pen will last the trip. A short delay in transfer to the fridge after delivery is unlikely to matter; several warm days without refrigeration is a different situation entirely.
Semaglutide solution should appear clear and colourless or faintly yellow. Cloudiness, visible particles, or a change in colour are reasons not to use the pen. These changes do not always mean temperature damage (they can also indicate other issues) but they are always a reason to pause and contact your prescriber or pharmacy before injecting.
If you suspect a pen has been exposed to freezing or prolonged heat, the safest course is to discard it and request a replacement. Do not attempt to judge whether degraded medicine is still effective; protein medicines give no reliable external signal of potency loss. Your prescriber and the pharmacy team are the right people to advise on whether a replacement is warranted and how quickly you need one.
You can also report any suspected product quality issues via the MHRA Yellow Card scheme, which accepts reports from patients as well as healthcare professionals. If temperature damage during transit is a recurring concern with your current supplier, that is worth raising directly, or exploring whether a pharmacy with a stronger cold-chain process would serve you better.
Storage is one part of a broader picture. Wegovy is licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition, and it is prescribed following a clinical assessment, a prescriber reviews your health information before any treatment is issued. There is no over-the-counter route.
If you are considering Wegovy and want to understand the full picture (including how room-temperature storage fits into everyday life on treatment, what results the clinical trials produced, or how the cost of private treatment compares to what is included) the Wegovy treatment overview is a good place to start. For a broader look at weight-loss treatment options available in the UK, including how Wegovy compares with other licensed medicines, that overview covers the landscape clearly.
On the question of Wegovy pricing in the UK, one transparent price should cover consultation, prescription, and delivery with no hidden extras. That is the standard a properly regulated private service meets. When you are ready to take the next step, start your free consultation and a GPhC-registered prescriber will review your information the same day, and if you want a detailed breakdown of what temperature Wegovy should be stored at across every stage from dispensing to injection, that guidance is worth reading before your first pen arrives.
