Why does Wegovy need to be kept cold in the first place?

Semaglutide, the active medicine in Wegovy, is a protein-based molecule. Like many biological medicines, it is sensitive to heat and light, which can degrade the active ingredient and reduce or change its effect. The 2°C to 8°C refrigeration requirement is not a formality, it reflects the conditions under which stability was confirmed during the development and licensing process. Freezing is just as damaging as overheating. A pen that has frozen (even briefly) should not be used. There is no reliable way to tell by looking at it whether the medicine has been affected, so the principle is simple: if in doubt, do not inject it. What counts as 'room temperature' and why does it matter?

The permitted room-temperature window assumes conditions below a defined ceiling, typically described in SmPCs as below 30°C. A British kitchen on an overcast Tuesday is very different from a car parked in a Spanish car park in August. The latter can reach 60°C inside; a pen left there is almost certainly compromised, however briefly.

Practical checkpoints: keep the pen in a cool bag with an ice pack (not touching the pen directly) on hot days or during travel. Do not leave it on a sunny windowsill, in a bag left in a warm car, or near a radiator. Only in the sense that the clock starts running on the in-use period once the pen has been activated.
