Start journey Learn moreYes, an endocrinologist can prescribe Wegovy in the UK, but they are far from the only doctor who can. Any clinician holding the appropriate prescribing authority — including GPs and independent prescribers at regulated pharmacies — can issue a Wegovy prescription after a proper clinical assessment. Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4mg) is a prescription-only medicine licensed for weight management in the UK; a prescriber decides suitability, not the type of specialist you happen to see.

It is a common assumption, and an understandable one. Wegovy works through a hormone receptor involved in appetite regulation, semaglutide is prescribed for type 2 diabetes in other contexts, and the medicine has been in the news mainly in relation to obesity as a medical condition. All of this makes it feel like specialist territory.
In practice, prescribing authority in the UK is not tied to specialty. A doctor, dentist, nurse or pharmacist who holds independent prescriber status can prescribe any licensed medicine within their competence. That includes Wegovy. The NHS medicines page for semaglutide makes clear that treatment decisions rest on clinical suitability, not on which type of clinician you see. An endocrinologist may be the right person for someone with a complex hormonal condition alongside obesity; they are not a required gateway for everyone.
If you have been told you need a specialist to access Wegovy, that advice may reflect a specific NHS pathway, not the law or the licence. The distinction matters, because it affects where you look and how long you wait.
NICE's appraisal of semaglutide for weight management (TA875) recommends it for use within specialist weight management services, for a maximum of two years, in adults with a BMI of 35 or above and at least one weight-related condition. Ethnic-background thresholds are typically 2.5 kg/m² lower. That recommendation shapes the NHS route to Wegovy considerably: patients are generally referred by their GP into a multidisciplinary service, which may include dietitians, specialist nurses, clinical psychologists and, in some cases, endocrinologists.
An endocrinologist within that team could review and prescribe. Outside it, the same consultant in private practice can also prescribe, provided they conduct a proper assessment. Waiting lists for NHS specialist services are long in most areas. That is the honest reality, and if you are exploring your options right now, you are probably already aware of it.
From April 2026, GPs in England can also prescribe Wegovy directly under a new NHS contract arrangement, though practice participation varies. You can read more about whether a GP can prescribe Wegovy and what that involves in practice.
Outside the NHS, the field opens up. GPhC-registered independent prescribers working at regulated pharmacies can assess and prescribe Wegovy for eligible adults without a GP referral or a specialist appointment. This is a legal, licensed route. The prescriber still reviews your health history, BMI, weight-related conditions and any contraindications, the assessment is real, not a checkbox exercise.
At nume, every consultation is read the same day by a named, GPhC-registered independent prescriber. There is no algorithm making decisions. If Wegovy is clinically suitable, a prescription is issued and the medicine dispatched the same day (for orders received before 12pm, Monday to Friday), arriving the next working day via tracked DPD delivery in plain packaging, and you can find out more about how our Wegovy fast delivery service works and what to expect on the day your order is placed. You can learn more about how Wegovy prescriptions work in the UK and what the assessment covers.
For context on what private treatment costs, the Wegovy price comparison page explains what the market looks like and what a legitimate price should include. Separately, our clinical team page sets out who reviews consultations and the standards they work to.
If you have a diagnosed hormonal condition (hypothyroidism, PCOS, Cushing's syndrome) an endocrinologist is a sensible part of your care team, because those conditions can affect weight independently of energy intake. The prescriber needs to understand the full picture. In those cases, a specialist appointment is not a bureaucratic hurdle; it genuinely informs treatment.
If your situation is straightforward obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, there is no clinical reason why only an endocrinologist can help you. A qualified prescribing doctor or independent prescriber assessing you thoroughly is what counts. The credential that matters is prescribing authority and clinical competence, not the letters after the name.
Whatever route you are considering, verify any online pharmacy on the GPhC pharmacy register before sharing health information or making a payment. A pharmacy operating without registration is a serious red flag for any prescription medicine. If you would also like to know more about where to buy Wegovy with Klarna as a payment option, our dedicated page covers which regulated providers offer it and what to check before you proceed. When you are ready to check whether Wegovy is right for you, check your eligibility through a free consultation with our prescribing team.
