Mounjaro does not come in tablet form. It is only available as a once-weekly injection, and buying it legally in the UK requires a prescription following a clinical assessment — there is no over-the-counter route. If you are looking for an oral GLP-1 option for weight loss, there is now a licensed alternative worth knowing about. This page explains what Mounjaro actually is, why it is injection-only, and how the prescription process works through a regulated UK pharmacy like nume.

How to get Mounjaro legally in the UK: the clinical route, step by step

Does Mounjaro come in a tablet or pill version?

No. Mounjaro (the brand name for tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly) is supplied exclusively as a subcutaneous injection via a pre-filled KwikPen. Each pen contains four weekly doses, and the medicine is injected once a week into the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. There is no oral or tablet formulation of tirzepatide licensed anywhere in the UK.

The reason is partly pharmacological. Tirzepatide is a peptide molecule that would be broken down in the digestive system before it could be absorbed effectively, which is why it is delivered directly under the skin. You may have read about Mounjaro tablets in passing, this search often reflects a genuine curiosity about whether an injection-free option exists. For weight management specifically, the closest equivalent is Wegovy in tablet form.

In June 2026, the MHRA approved the first oral GLP-1 medicine licensed for weight loss in the UK: Wegovy tablets (oral semaglutide). It is a once-daily tablet taken on an empty stomach each morning, titrated up to a 25mg maintenance dose. That approval made the UK the first country in Europe to licence an oral GLP-1 for weight management. It is a different medicine, with its own clinical assessment process, but it is a legitimate option for people who would prefer not to inject. Our weight loss treatment overview covers both routes.

Is Mounjaro a prescription-only medicine, and what does that mean for buying it?

Yes. Mounjaro is a Prescription-Only Medicine (POM) under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012. That means it cannot be purchased from a pharmacy, website or any other seller without a valid prescription issued by a registered prescriber following a clinical assessment. Selling it without one is illegal. The MHRA has been explicit that GLP-1 medicines are not assessed or appropriate for quick or cosmetic weight loss, and that the only safe route is through a regulated clinical pathway.

There is a practical safety reason behind that legal framework. A prescriber needs to check your weight, medical history, any medicines you already take, and whether the treatment is appropriate given your health picture as a whole. BMI alone does not settle the question. Some conditions and medicines are incompatible with tirzepatide, and the starting dose and titration schedule need to be managed by a clinician, not self-directed.

If you want to understand the process in more detail before starting, the nume FAQs cover the most common questions our prescribers receive. If you are weighing up whether you can buy Mounjaro and what the legitimate routes look like, the full guide on whether you can buy Mounjaro in the UK also sets out what legitimate access looks like versus the red flags to avoid.

What are the red flags when looking to buy Mounjaro online?

The MHRA has warned repeatedly about counterfeit and illegally traded weight-loss pens being sold online and through social media. In a 2025 enforcement operation, around 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines (worth roughly £45 million) were seized, and the first illicit UK site manufacturing fake tirzepatide pens was raided. Some counterfeit pens seized in earlier operations were found to contain insulin, which caused serious harm to people who used them.

Red flags include any seller offering Mounjaro without a prescription or a proper clinical assessment, prices far below what the licensed supply chain supports, social-media sellers with no verifiable registration, and discount codes tied to injectable prescription medicines. If you are unsure whether an online pharmacy is legitimate, you can check the GPhC register directly. Every regulated UK online pharmacy must hold a GPhC premises registration, ours is 9012878, verifiable at the register. Suspect sellers can be reported to the MHRA via the Yellow Card scheme.

How does the clinical process work at nume?

At nume, you start with a free online consultation, no payment before a prescriber has reviewed your case. A GPhC-registered Independent Prescriber reads your answers personally, the same day. Not software. Not a checklist algorithm. A real clinician who can ask follow-up questions and who signs off every prescription individually.

Eligibility for Mounjaro under its UK licence covers adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or 27 or above alongside at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. Lower BMI thresholds can apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK clinical guidance. If the prescriber determines that treatment is appropriate, your order is dispatched the same day (provided you order by 12pm on a weekday). Your pen arrives the next working day in a plain, unbranded box via DPD, you get a tracking link so you know exactly when to expect it, and it goes straight into the fridge door when it lands.

Every repeat order goes through its own fresh clinical review. There are no subscriptions and no automatic renewals. Our clinical team reviews each case on its own terms, each time. If you have questions before starting, the support team is available seven days a week. To check your eligibility and begin, speak to our prescribers through a free consultation.
