In clinical trials, adults taking tirzepatide (Mounjaro) at the highest dose lost an average of around 20–21% of their body weight over 72 weeks, with some analyses reaching approximately 22.5% — making it the most effective licensed weight-loss injection currently available in the UK. Those figures come from SURMOUNT-1, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, and they reflect what happened under controlled trial conditions alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Real-world results vary: your starting weight, the dose your prescriber reaches, how your body responds and what changes you make to your diet all shape the outcome. Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine and a prescriber decides whether it is clinically appropriate for you before any treatment begins.

Trial results, real-world expectations and what Mounjaro's cost actually covers

What the SURMOUNT trials reported — and why the numbers need context

The headline figure most people encounter is 20–21% average body-weight reduction at the 15mg dose over 72 weeks, drawn from SURMOUNT-1. For someone weighing 100 kg at the start, that is roughly 20–21 kg. Some participants did better; some did less well. The trial enrolled 2,539 adults with obesity and no diabetes, all of whom were also following dietary and activity guidance throughout, weight loss was not medication alone.

A second trial, SURMOUNT-5, compared tirzepatide directly with semaglutide 2.4mg (Wegovy) in a head-to-head open-label study. Tirzepatide produced greater average weight reduction over 72 weeks. NICE's appraisal of tirzepatide (TA1026) reviewed this evidence and noted that indirect comparisons favour tirzepatide over existing GLP-1 medicines, while acknowledging that not everyone reaches the highest dose.

Dose matters significantly here. The 2.5mg starting dose is the body's settling-in period, it exists to reduce early nausea, not to drive weight loss. Results build as the prescriber titrates upward, typically in four-week steps. If you're wondering what happens in the first week, the honest answer is: not much on the scales yet. The meaningful reductions accumulate from around month two onward and continue through the treatment period.

NICE flags that if someone has lost less than 5% of body weight after six months at the highest tolerated dose, continuing treatment is reviewed. That is a sensible clinical safeguard, not a failure threshold, it keeps treatment purposeful.

How UK private pricing works for Mounjaro, and what to watch for

Mounjaro is a prescription-only medicine, which means any legitimate price must include a clinical assessment and a valid prescription. It cannot legally be sold without one. UK private treatment is priced per pen, per month, and varies between providers and by dose. For context: Eli Lilly raised Mounjaro's UK list price from 1 September 2025, with the highest-dose pen rising from around £122 to around £330 per four-week pen. Reported private prices since then range roughly £149–£375 a month depending on dose and provider.

What headline prices sometimes leave out is worth knowing. A low-looking figure may exclude the consultation fee, the prescription charge, delivery costs and any ongoing clinical support when you have questions between doses. When you add those back in, the real cost can be quite different from what the homepage advertises. Our guide to Mounjaro pricing in the UK breaks down what a realistic monthly figure looks like across providers and doses.

At nume, we do not run discount codes or promotional offers. Deliberately. The price shown on the treatment page covers the clinical consultation, prescription, medicine and free next-working-day delivery, plus 7-day aftercare from our prescribers. No subscription locks you in; every repeat order is clinically re-reviewed. If that total figure is higher than the cheapest listing you've found elsewhere, that's a trade-off we've chosen to make. You can read more about how Mounjaro is priced and what different structures mean in practice.

Why 'cheapest' is the wrong question when the medicine is a POM

A small saving per pen answers the wrong question entirely. Mounjaro is a Black Triangle medicine under additional MHRA monitoring. It is supplied through the licensed UK supply chain, dispensed by a GPhC-registered pharmacy against a valid prescription written by a qualified prescriber. When any of those steps is missing or compromised, the risk is not theoretical.

The MHRA has issued repeated warnings about counterfeit weight-loss pens sold online and via social media. Fake pens have been found to contain insulin rather than tirzepatide, a dangerous substitution that has hospitalised people. In October 2025, enforcement teams raided the first illicit UK manufacturing site producing counterfeit tirzepatide pens, seizing approximately 20 million doses of illegally traded weight-loss medicines with a street value of around £45 million. Red flags include sellers offering these medicines without a prescription, prices far below market rates, and discount codes from sources you cannot verify. You can report any suspect seller directly at the MHRA's Yellow Card scheme.

The right measure for a prescription medicine is not the cheapest price. It is a genuine supply chain, a real clinical review and a pharmacy you can check on the GPhC register, ours is registered under premises number 9012878. If you are comparing providers and want to understand what drives the cost differences, our page on finding the cheapest Mounjaro responsibly covers what to look for, and our guide to identifying the cheapest Mounjaro supplier in the UK explains how to assess whether a lower price reflects genuine value or a corner cut somewhere in the supply chain.

What drives how much weight you actually lose

We hear this question from almost everyone who contacts us, and the honest answer is that the trial data is a population average, not a personal forecast. The factors that shift individual results include the dose your prescriber reaches (not everyone tolerates 15mg), how consistently you combine treatment with dietary change, your starting weight, metabolic history and how long you stay on treatment.

Most people notice a meaningful reduction in appetite within the first few weeks. For a closer look at the pace of loss, weekly Mounjaro weight-loss patterns and what to expect month by month set realistic expectations grounded in what the clinical evidence shows, not optimistic projections. Mounjaro is licensed for weight management alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased activity, and the NHS's tirzepatide guidance is clear that the medicine works best as part of that wider effort.

If you'd like a prescriber to assess whether Mounjaro is suitable for your situation, our free consultation is the straightforward next step. There's no obligation and no fee just for the assessment.
