What the licensed oral GLP-1 option actually is

On 11 June 2026, the MHRA approved Wegovy tablets, making the UK the first country in Europe to license an oral GLP-1 medicine for weight management. The dosing schedule starts at 1.5 mg daily and moves through 4 mg and 9 mg stages before reaching the 25 mg maintenance dose, with at least a month spent at each level. Why the injection still leads on the evidence, and when that matters

If needles genuinely weren't a barrier, the injection data is stronger. SURMOUNT-1, involving 2,539 adults over 72 weeks, found average body-weight reductions of around 20–21% at the 15 mg dose of tirzepatide, figures that have not yet been matched by any oral formulation. The SURMOUNT-5 trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2025, compared tirzepatide directly against semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly and found greater average weight loss with tirzepatide.
