Wegovy on the NHS: What the Guidance Says and How to Decide Your Next Step

What the NHS will actually fund, and where the strict lines are

NICE's recommendation for Wegovy on the NHS (published in March 2023 as TA875) comes with precise conditions. The two-year cap matters too. NICE's guidance specifies that NHS semaglutide should be stopped if you have not lost at least 5% of your body weight after six months on the maintenance dose, and that funding does not continue beyond two years regardless. People with a BMI between 30 and 34.9 who do not meet the specialist-referral criteria are outside the scope of NHS Wegovy funding at present. That is the single biggest reason people explore the private route.

The waiting list question: why NHS Wegovy access varies so much by area

Specialist weight management services in England are commissioned by local NHS integrated care boards, and capacity varies considerably. The honest framing: NHS access is real, but it is rationed and slow in most parts of England. That is not a criticism of the NHS, it reflects genuine resource constraints. It is simply the reality that shapes most people's decision.

The private route: what it involves and where to verify a pharmacy is legitimate
