Needle length, penetration depth and why 4–5 mm is the right range

The Wegovy pen uses a needle in the region of 4–5 mm. That figure is not arbitrary. Research into subcutaneous injection technique (including guidance adopted by NHS diabetes and obesity teams) consistently shows that a 4–5 mm needle reaches the subcutaneous fat layer reliably in most adults regardless of body composition, provided the pen is held perpendicular to the skin surface and pressed flat. Going deeper risks intramuscular delivery, which changes the absorption profile and increases discomfort.

One practical note: the used pen must go into a sharps bin after its four doses are exhausted, not into household recycling. A 1-litre sharps container is the standard domestic solution and can be collected through most council or pharmacy disposal schemes. For some people, the pen's dimensions are not really about measurements at all, they are a proxy for a deeper question about whether they can manage a weekly injection.
