Why is there no single cheapest price for weight loss injections?
Ask five providers what a month of treatment costs and you'll get five answers. That's how the private market works here. Prices sit at the per-pen or per-month level, and each clinic sets its own fee against the dose you're on and the medicine you've been prescribed. A starter pen is not priced the same as a higher-dose one, so a figure that looks tempting may simply be the lowest rung of a ladder that climbs as your dose does.
The list price of the medicine itself moved recently, too. As widely reported in August 2025, Eli Lilly raised Mounjaro's UK list price from 1 September 2025, with the highest dose rising from roughly £122 to around £330 per four-week pen. Since then, typical private prices have ranged somewhere between £149 and £375 a month depending on dose and provider. Treat any figure you see as a snapshot, not a fixed rate.

Are weight loss injections cheaper on the NHS?
For those who qualify, NHS access is the lowest-cost route, since you'd pay prescription charges rather than private fees. The catch is that eligibility is strict and phased. Under the NICE recommendation for tirzepatide, the current stage covers adults with a BMI of 40 or above who also have four or more of a defined set of weight-related conditions, with further groups being brought in over time. Lower thresholds apply for some ethnic backgrounds under UK guidance.
From April 2026, some GP practices can prescribe under the new contract, but taking part is optional, so availability genuinely varies by area and practice. Wegovy on the NHS runs through specialist weight management services, where waiting lists are often long. None of this is a criticism of the NHS; it's simply how a limited, phased rollout works in practice.

Which weight loss injection works out best value?
"Cheapest" and "best value" aren't the same question, and the honest answer to which injection suits you is a clinical one. The two most relevant options for UK weight management are tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, and semaglutide, sold as Wegovy. Both are once-weekly injections, both start at a low tolerability dose and are titrated upward by your prescriber, and both are licensed for adults with a BMI of 30 or over, or 27 and above with a weight-related condition.
On the evidence, in clinical trials tirzepatide produced greater average weight reduction than semaglutide 2.4mg in a head-to-head comparison, though a higher semaglutide dose has since narrowed the gap. Why is cheapest the wrong test for a prescription medicine?
Price is simply the wrong yardstick for something a prescriber has to sign off. The measure that actually protects you is whether the medicine is genuine, comes through the licensed UK supply chain, and is prescribed after a real assessment of your health. A few pounds saved counts for nothing if what arrives isn't what it claims to be.
The MHRA has been clear on this.
